TLC Awarded Lake Management Grants
Twin Lakes Conservancy has been awarded grants valued at $26,000 for gathering information and scientific data leading to the creation of a long-term management plan for Twin Lakes. The two grants were awarded to TLC under the State of Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources Lake Management Planning Program. Under one grant, TLC and the United States Geological Survey will assess the water quality of Twin Lakes in comparison with other lakes of the same type in the region, and will build a quantitative data base, so that future trends (improving or worsening water quality) can be detected quickly. Under the second grant, TLC will undertake a comprehensive aquatic plant survey and create a long-term aquatic plant management plan. The presence of invasive lake “weeds” has been of concern to Twin Lakes property owners and lake users for some time.
TLC will also use grant funds to create a lake and land use history for Twin Lakes and to identify current economic and recreational uses of local natural resources. This information will provide another form of “baseline data” by which to measure future changes in the quality of the ecosystem, and to use for long-term management planning. Additional funds will make possible public education projects, including newsletters, public forums, the creation of a “shoreland packet” for local lake users, the creation of a lake library, and other means for enhancing local understanding of Twin Lakes’ ecology and lake management techniques.
The total cost of all projects described above is approximately $33,000 over three years (2002-2004). TLC will contribute approximately $7,000 to these projects, a substantial portion of which will come in the form of donated labor.
Our Twin Lakes are like a rare jewel. For the first time, we will be able to document their unique qualities, and create a plan for protecting them. TLC appreciates the opportunity to become partners with local residents and local, state and federal agencies to achieve these goals.
